The Engagement Story

Hi everyone! Hope you're enjoying your weekend and the lovely snow that's falling -- at least, here in Northern Virginia. As Matt and I spent the majority of the day with my parents for their 40th wedding anniversary, I thought I'd tell y'all about how I got engaged. If you're not interested in crying and, well, more crying, then you should probably move on to another post.

Matt and I have been living together since February 2007 (hey, this is our two-year anniversary of my being here -- look at that!) and everything's just gone so smoothly from the get-go, it's a little scary. We'd both talked about our future together as though it were a given, so I always knew we'd get married, I just never had a timeline. Back in October 2008 I was working at a horrible, horrible place that I'll not mention and completely stressed out, as well as working on Saturdays. Not my favorite. I'd come home the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend and Matt told me he had a surprise: He'd booked us a night at the Meander Inn to get us away for a bit. I was so excited, I just squealed and thought nothing else of it.

Well, we drive up the next day and get to our gorgeous bungalow, and it's amazing: there are roses, champagne, cheese and crackers, and truffles waiting in our room! Still, I had no clue that anything else was happening. I only knew we had a fancy dinner to go to later, so in the meantime we walked around the grounds, looking over this beautiful setting. We come back and Matt suggested we have a little food and some champagne out on our private patio, which sounded delightful to me.

Outside, we get ready to toast and Matt says, "I just wanted to do this for you because I know you're really stressed out right now, and because I'm so proud of you for doing the Breast Cancer 3-Day (which I'd completed the first weekend of October) and because I want to ask you to marry me." He may have said other things at that point, but I had burst into tears so I have no idea what they may have been. I just kept nodding and sobbing. I do remember him saying, "Wait, wait! You haven't even seen the ring yet!" Well, he whipped that out, and I sobbed even harder. I could not have picked out a more perfect ring if I'd done it myself. And he did it all on his own! This pic doesn't really do it justice.

He was shaking. I was shaking and crying. It was so perfect. Then, of course, the phone calls began and wouldn't you know we couldn't get in touch with anyone! We went on to have an amazing, romantic, four-course dinner at the Inn and delicious breakfast the next morning. It was intimate, it was highly romantic and I was completely surprised so it all couldn't have been any better!

We're actually trying to have our 12-person wedding party stay at the Meander Inn the night after the nuptials because we were so impressed by the Inn the first time around. Yes, the circumstances were extraordinary, but we're pretty sure the place itself was, y'know, OK, anyway. Mostly, we want to share our special place with our special guests on our -- say it with me -- special day.
